Golden Tigers Classes

Classes & Trips – Plans have not been finalized for all the classes and trips. Be sure to check for any changes at enrollment.

Class Attendance – Class attendance is not required: however, instructors work hard to prepare for these classes. Please let your instructor know if you cannot attend a class session.

New Teachers – This semester Marilyn McSpadden will be teaching quilting classes. Many thanks to all our teachers for giving their time and talent to our program.

September, 2008

Exercise – (Session I) – Monday & Wednesday, September 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24 & 29, 1:30 – 2:30 pm., Brown Center – Room 132. Gina McKown, Instructor. Class participants will work on the joint area and flexibility. Basic stretching, kickboxing, yoga, and using vita bands will also be explored.

Aqua Fun – (Session I) – Tuesday & Thursday, September 2,  4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25  & 30, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., Family Aquatics Center, ACHS.  Debbi Davidson, Instructor. Participants will be led by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises that can help increase joint flexibility and improve mobility. There will be a $3.00 pool fee for this class.

Reader’s Theater – Tuesday, September 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, October 7, 14 and 21, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Webb-Brown – Room 205. Sue Gregg, Instructor. The
class participants will read from a script and add expressions to portray the personality of the character. Several performances will be scheduled.

Taste of American History – Thursday, September 11 and 18, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Margaret Neal, Instructor. During this class you will have the opportunity to taste favorite presidential cookies and learn fun facts about our Presidents. We will cover James Madison, James Monroe, and John Quincy Adams this fall. 

Creating a Wildlife Friendly Yard – Monday, September 15, 22 and 29, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Webb-Brown – Room 204. Cheryl Shepherd, Instructor. Learn how to attract butterflies, birds and other
wildlife to your own backyard, no matter how big or small. The class will focus on hummingbirds, bluebirds, orioles and even bats!!

Woodcarving – Tuesday, September 23, 30, October 7 & 14, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m., Cherokee Strip Museum.
Herb Sparks, Instructor. Class participants will work on one project for the fall session. A wood blank will be for sale at the class. Bring your tools and be ready for a challenging project.

Mystery Quilt – Tuesday, September 16th, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Marilyn McSpadden, Instructor. Class participants will be given clues to create a quilt top during class. This is a very easy quilt and looks great in seasonal colors or baby fabrics. Fabrics, sewing machine and basic sewing supplies will be needed. Supply list available at enrollment.

Creating Family Recipe Books – Tuesday, September 23, 30, October 7 and 14, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 203.  The class participants will learn how to organize recipes and create a special cookbook for future generations. Class members will work on individual projects as well as make sample pages and cards including digital designs. There will be a $10 class fee for this class and additional supplies may be needed.

Computer Skills for Today – Monday, September 29 and October 6, 13, 20 & 27, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Learn the basic computer skills you need to survive in today’s society. You’ll discover practical applications for email, word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

October, 2008

Digital Photography – Wednesday, October 1, 8 & 15, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Webb-Brown – Room 205. Sheila Robbins, Instructor. This class will offer tips and tricks to taking better photographs with your digital camera. Information on the basics – composition, angle, lighting and lens – will be discussed in the class.

Easy Christmas Gifts – Wednesday, October 8 &15, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Sue Carpenter, Instructor. This class will feature several ideas for Christmas gifts – apron, quillow, cell phone holder, pillows, oven mitt and more. These gift items are fun and easy to make. Fabrics, sewing machine, and basic sewing supplies are needed. Supply list available at enrollment.

Quilts of Valor – Tuesday, October 28th, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Sr. Center. This is a special project for wounded soldiers or Veterans. Quilt tops will be made during the class and then donated for soldiers or veterans when they are completed. This 2 color quilt is wonderful in reds or blues with tans or whites. Fabrics, sewing machine and basic sewing supplies needed. Supply list available at enrollment.

This & That – Tuesday, October 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18 and 25, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Margaret Neal, Instructor. Each session will have a guest speaker and cover a variety of topics.

Holiday Cards & More – Thursday, October 30, November 6, 13 & 20, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 203. Margaret Neal, Instructor. This class will feature cards and gift items that are fun and easy to make. A calendar and door hanger as well as holiday cards & gift tags will be made in this class. There will be a $10 class fee for this class and additional supplies may be needed.

November, 2008

Creating a Photo Story – Wednesday, November 5, 12, & 19, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center - Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Bring out the best in your images! Photo Story is a free software program that you can use to create a picture story. Great for graduation, birthday, wedding and retirement pictures. Some computer experience highly recommended for this class.

AARP Driver Safety – Thursday and Friday,   November 6 & 7, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 206. Ed Hanna, Instructor. This is an eight-hour classroom refresher course for experienced motorists. You must attend both sessions to receive certificate. There is a $10.00 fee to cover class handouts.

Beyond the Basics –Monday, November 17, 24 and December 1, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. In this class you will learn more about using word processing and power point for everyday projects. Labels, calendars and certificates are some of the projects you will complete in this class.

Table Toppings – Tuesday, November 11 & 18,
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center, Sue Carpenter, Instructor. Learn to create a table runner or placemats using a fusible grid. You can make either item or both. Fabrics, basic sewing supplies & sewing machine are needed. Complete supply list available at enrollment.

Refunds are not given if you are unable to attend a class. However, you may transfer to another class if space is available.
