Golden Tigers Classes

Class Attendance – Class attendance is not required; however, instructors work hard to prepare for these classes. Please let your instructor know if you cannot attend a class session. If the college is closed due to bad weather, we will not hold classes. Information is available on local radio and television stations.

February, 2012

Aqua Fun – (Session I) – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, February 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27 & 29, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Family Aquatics Center, ACHS.  Debbi Davidson, Instructor. Participants will be led by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises that can help increase joint flexibility and improve mobility. There will be a $3.00 pool fee for this class.

Exercise – (Session I) – Tuesday & Thursday, February 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23 & 28, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., Webb - Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Gina McKown, Instructor. Class participants will work on the joint area and flexibility. Basic stretching, kickboxing, yoga, and using vita bands will also be explored.

Cards & More – Monday, February 6, 13, 20 & 27, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 203. Margaret Neal, Instructor. This class will feature birthday and Valentine cards. Please bring scissors and your favorite adhesive. There will be a $10 class fee.

Visual Journaling – Tuesday & Thursday, February 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 & 23, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 205. Judi Groves – Instructor. Class participants will create a visual journal by using magazine pictures, writing about thoughts, painting and drawing abstract squiggles. A fun class – no experience necessary!!!

Reader’s Theater – Tuesday, February 14, 21, 28, March 6, & 13, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Webb-Brown – Room 203. Sue Gregg, Instructor. Class participants will read from a script and add expressions to portray the personality of the character. The class members will participate in several performances.

Beginning  Mah Jongg – Wednesday, February 8, 15, 22, 29, March 7 & 14, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Webb – Brown Academic Center – Room 203. Janice Stover and Margaret Neal, Instructors. This is a popular game played with tiles and a game card.  We will use the 2011 game card. Instructions will be covered in the first few sessions and then class participants will continue to meet and play the game.

Mah Jongg Players – Wednesday, February 8, 15, 22, 29, March 7, 14, 28, April 4, 11, 18 & 25, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., Webb – Brown Academic Center – Room 207. Janice Stover and Margaret Neal – Instructors. This class is for experienced Mah Jongg players. Class participants will continue to learn game strategies and improve their game. 

Computer Skills for Today – Wednesday, February 8, 15, 22, 29, March 7 & 14, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Learn the basic computer skills you need to survive in today’s society. You’ll discover Practical applications for creating word documents and how to create and organize files.

This & That – Tuesday, February 21, 28, March 6 & 13, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Margaret Neal, Instructor. Each session will have a guest speaker & cover a variety of topics including cooking for one or two and health issues.

TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Finished) – Thursday, February 23, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Sue Carpenter, Instructor. Do you have some sewing and quilting projects at home that are unfinished because you need a little help? If so, this is your opportunity to bring those projects to class and get them completed.

March, 2012

Raggedy Quilt – Monday, March 5 & 12, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Sue Carpenter, Instructor. This is a fun scrappy project using coordinating blocks of fabrics. This fun quilt can be made any size from throw to King size. Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies are needed. A complete supply list will be available at enrollment.

Beyond Basic Genealogy – Monday, March 5, 12, 26, April 2, 9 & 16, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 105. Ron Upton, Instructor. The class participants will use a computer to collect data and learn how to integrate data into a family history book. Classes will also cover creating documents and scanning pictures. Please pick up additional information for the class at enrollment.

Woodcarving – Tuesday, March 6, 13, 20, 27 & April 3, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Cherokee Strip Museum. Linda Kenzy, Instructor. This class is open for beginning and advanced carvers. Wood blanks will be available for purchase (approx. $10.00) at the first class. Bring your tools and be ready for a fun project.

TLC for Pets, Working & Sporting Dogs – Wednesday, March 7, 14, 28 & April 4, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 206. Dr. Steve Swaim, Instructor. The class will cover basic health care of pet, working and sporting dogs. It will include first aid for dogs.

Beyond the Basics – Wednesday, March 28, April 4 & 11, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. In this class you will learn more about using word processing and power point for everyday projects. Labels, greeting cards and certificates are some of the projects you will complete in this class.

Scrapbooking – Thursday, March 29, April 5, 12 & 26, 1:30 – 4:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 203. Margaret Neal – Instructor. This class is designed to help you complete album pages. Page layouts will be shared and the cricut and other tools will be available to use.

April, 2012

A  Journey with the Hopi Indians – Tuesday, April 3 & 10, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m., Webb – Brown Academic Center – Room 206. Judith Drongoski – Instructor. Judy will share her journey with the Hopi Indians with us. She will cover the history, culture, notable people, art and crafts

Walking – Wednesday, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2 & 9, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Veteran’s Lake. Judy Jordan – Instructor. Enjoy walking with friends and neighbors around Veteran’s Lake.

Creating a Photo Story –Wednesday, April 18, 25 & May 2, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center - Room 105. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Learn to use this free software program to create a picture story for a special birthday, graduation, trip, wedding or retirement. Some computer experience highly recommended for this class.

Bags, Bags, & More Bags – Tuesday, April 17 & 24, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center, Sue Carpenter- Instructor. If you need a bag for your glasses, loose change, cell phones, etc., you will find it in this class. Sewing machine & tools needed. 

Driver Safety – Wednesday & Thursday, March 17 & 18, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., Webb – Brown Academic Center – Room 103. Robert Chorn – Instructor. This is an 8 hour classroom refresher course for motorists. Insurance companies in Kansas give a discount on your car insurance upon completion of this class. You must attend both sessions to receive certificate to present to your insurance company. Cost - $12.00.
