Golden Tigers Classes

Class Attendance – Class attendance is not required; however, instructors work hard to prepare for these classes. Please let your instructor know if you cannot attend a class session. If the college is closed due to bad weather, we will not hold classes. Information is available on local radio and television stations.

Fall 2010

September, 2010
Aqua Fun – (Session I) –Monday, Wednesday, Friday, September 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27 & 29, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Family Aquatics Center, ACHS.  Debbi Davidson, Instructor. Participants will be led by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises that can help increase joint flexibility and improve mobility. There will be a $3.00 pool fee for this class.

Exercise – (Session I) – Tuesday & Thursday, September 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 & 30, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., Webb - Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Gina McKown, Instructor. Class participants will work on the joint area and flexibility. Basic stretching, kickboxing, yoga, and using vita bands will also be explored.

Computer Skills for Today – Tuesday, August 31, September 7, 14, 21, 28, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 102. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Learn the basic computer skills you need to survive in today’s society. You’ll discover practical applications for creating word documents and how to create and organize files.

Mah-Jongg – Wednesday, September 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, October 6,13 & 20, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Webb – Brown Academic Center – Room 205. Margaret Neal, Instructor. This is a game popular in the 1920’s and is becoming popular again. It is played with tiles and a game card and is similar to today’s rummy. We will use the 2010 game card. Instructions will be covered in the first few sessions and then class participants will continue to meet and play the game. Game cards are available to purchase.

Woodcarving – Tuesday, September 28, October 5, 12, 19 & 26, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Cherokee Strip  Museum. Linda Kenzy, Instructor. This class is open for beginning and advanced carvers. The advanced participants will work on a mule carving project.  Another project will be offered for the beginning carvers. Wood blanks will be available for purchase (approx. $10.00) at the class. Bring your tools and be ready for a challenging project.

Creative Writing - Wednesday, September 8, 15, 22, 29, October 6, 13 & 20, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 206. Grant Williams – Instructor. This is a short course in writing prose and poetry, building characters, dialogue and storylines. It is a great way to share your creative ideas with others.

Taking Better Photos – Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, September 13, 14, 15, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.. Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 102. Ron Upton – Instructor. This is a basic photography class to help you take better photos. Basic photo editing and printing options will also be discussed. Please bring some favorite photos as well as camera and instruction manual to the first class.

Taste of American History - Thursday, September 16 & 23, 1:00 –2:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 205. Margaret Neal – Instructor. During this class you will have the opportunity to taste favorite presidential cookies and learn fun facts about our Presidents. This fall we will cover Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan.

Quilt in a Day – Monday, September 27, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Sue Carpenter, Instructor. This is a fun and simple method to make a great looking quilt using your scraps. Basic sewing supplies and machine are needed for this class. A complete supply list will be available at enrollment.

Reader’s Theater – Tuesday, September 28, October 5 & 12, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Webb-Brown – Room 203. Sue Gregg, Instructor. The class participants will read from a script and add expressions to portray the personality of the character. Class members will participate in several performances.

October, 2010

Sewing Machine Embroidery –Wednesday, October 20, 9:30 – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center. Sue Carpenter – Instructor. Learn how to use your sewing machine to create beautiful embroidery designs. You must have a machine with a stretch or triple action stitch. Basic sewing supplies, open toed appliqué foot and sewing machine are required. A complete list of supplies needed will be available at enrollment.

Beyond the Basics – Tuesday, October 19, 26 & November 2, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 102. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. In this class you will learn more about using word processing and power point for everyday projects. Labels, greeting cards and certificates are some of the projects you will complete in this class.

Scrapbooking Travel Memories – Monday, October 25, November 1 & 8, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 205. Margaret Neal – Instructor. This class will focus on planning and creating travel photo pages. Ideas for borders and page layouts will be covered. The class will also look at digital designs. There will be a $10 class fee for this class.

Wii Exercise for Seniors – Wednesday, October 27, November 3, 10, & 17, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb – Brown Academic Center, Room 206. The Wii is a great way to exercise in your home or with friends. Don’t miss this opportunity to bowl, golf, ski or simply exercise while having fun in this Wii class.

November, 2010

This class will feature holiday cards and gifts that are fun and easy to make. Please bring scissors and your favorite adhesive. There will be a $10 class fee for this class.

This & That – Tuesday, November 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 204. Margaret Neal, Instructor. Each session will have a guest speaker & cover a variety of topics.

Using the Internet –Tuesday, November 16, 23 & 30, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center - Room 102. Larry Schwintz, Instructor. Information and tips on using the internet successfully. Class members will have fun projects to learn how to use the internet.

Creative Holiday Projects – Thursday, Nov. 4 & 18, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Ark City Senior Center, Sue Carpenter, Instructor. Make several items to decorate your house for Christmas including a card holder and a simple table runner. Fabrics, basic sewing supplies & sewing machine are needed. A complete supply list will be available at enrollment.
