Students talk about expectations of tutoring.

Tutoring Services Expectations

Tutoring is a Priviledge

Please be responsible in your use of tutors and prepared for your tutoring session. This means:

  • VISIT the tutoring center as soon as you need help.
  • ATTEMPT homework assignments before meeting.
  • BE PREPARED for the tutoring session by bringing your textbook, class syllabus, notes, tests, previous papers, current assignments, and any other relevant materials.
  • ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in tutoring sessions by having a list of appropriate questions ready to ask.

Tutoring Services Expectations

  • Tutors Will Not Do Your Homework
You will need to have attempted your homework assignment before coming to tutoring. Make a note of the concepts with which you are struggling. You and your tutor can review these concepts and work through similar problems. However, the tutor cannot do your homework for you, help you with take home tests, quizzes, or projects.
  • Tutors Will Not Rescue You
Nothing takes the place of consistent hard work throughout the semester. If you fail to do this, showing up for tutoring a week before final exams will not help. You should come to tutoring at the first sign of problems. Waiting will only get you further behind.
  • Tutors Will Not Take Responsibility for Your Learning
Tutors can help you learn, but they are not responsible for your learning. You will have to attend class regularly, participate in class, do your homework assignments, read your textbook, and develop a relationship with your instructor. Tutors cannot teach you material you have missed in class. Tutors are here to provide assistance, not first-time instruction.
  • Tutors Will Not Have All the Answers to Every Question
Cowley's tutors are well trained and knowledgeable about the subject they tutor, but they cannot be expected to know everything. However, you can expect them to model the steps a successful student would use to find solutions.
  • Tutors Will Not Be Available for All Subjects All the Time
Tutoring is available for mathematics, writing, and English each semester. Additional subject areas vary with semester and tutor availability. See the tutor schedule for specific information.
