Steps for an I-20

The I-20 is a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status for those who wish to study in the U.S. The I-20 form must be taken to the American embassy or consulate when you apply for a visa.

New International Students Must:

1. Complete an Application for Admission - Click here!
Fill out and submit an application for admission preferably at least thee months before the start of the term in which you wish to enroll (unless you are transferring from another institution within the USA).

2. Provide Transcripts
Submit an official copy of your high school (secondary school) academic transcripts with an English translation of the grades and grading scale.

3. Show English Proficiency
Submit evidence of English language proficiency. Students must meet one of the following criteria to demonstrate proficiency:

  1. Obtain a satisfactory score on the TOEFL test. Internet Based (iBT) = 61, Paper-based (PBT) = 500, Computer Based (CBT) = 173.  Cowley's TOEFL code is 6008.

  2. TSE (Test of Spoken English) score of 4 or higher.

  3. A minimum IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) score of 5.0. http://www.ielts.org
    "IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations."

  4. Have attended and graduated from an American high school within the United States and have maintained a minimum 2.0 CGPA (cumulative grade point average).

4. Submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship - Download
Submit a completed "Affidavit of Sponsorship" form which you may obtain from the Admissions Office. You must demonstrate that you, or your sponsor, are able to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, travel, and miscellaneous personal expenses while here in this country. The Affidavit of Sponsor form must be submitted with a seal from the sponsor's bank. 

5. Provide Health Insurance
Submit proof of international health insurance. If you do not have health insurance you will need to purchase and provide evidence of new coverage on or before arrival at Cowley.  Although we do not endorse certain insurance companies, the following list of companies have proven to be very reliable for previous students. 

  1. International Student Organization
  2. Compass Benefit Group

Transfer Students Must: (those who have previously attended a different US college)

Submit an official copy of your academic transcripts with an English translation of the grades and grading scale.  We will need copies of both high school and college transcripts. Be aware your college transcript must be mailed directly from your previous college to Cowley.

3. Show English Proficiency
Transfer students may demonstrate English proficiency by either of the methods listed below:

  • Complete English Composition I from an accredited college or university with a grade of "C" or higher.
    or
  • Have completed an Intensive English program at a previous college. 

4. Submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship - Download
Submit a completed "Affidavit of Sponsorship" form which you may obtain from the Admissions Office. You must demonstrate that you, or your sponsor, are able to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, travel, and miscellaneous personal expenses while here in this country. 5. Proof of Good Standing- Download
If you are transferring to Cowley from a school within the USA, you must provide proof that you are currently in status with no pending INS issues and do not owe money to any American college.
