The Interpreter Training Program's purpose is to educate interpreters to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing consumers. Students will do so by using a variety of modes and contact languages and integrating a knowledge of cultural differences by respecting the unique needs of each individual consumer in that communication process. Classes help students build skills in interpreting and transliterating for use in a variety of specialty settings. Coursework includes several hours of practical, hands on training. Additional classes focus on content related to deafness, culture and the profession of interpreting, including the interpersonal skills necessary for appropriate functioning within the interpreter role. Admission to the program requires completion of Conversational Sign Language, ASL I, English Composition I, English for Interpreters and Public Speaking with a 2.75 GPA or better.
