Cowley
Pi Day Raises $180
As part of national Pi Day, Cowley College’s Mu
Alpha Sigma Chi raised $180 during its annual Pi Day.
Pictured are Jason O’Toole, director of student support services
and talent search, and Todd Shepherd, chairman of Cowley’s Social
Science Department, received a pie in the face as they had the most
points in the voting.
Voting was done by placing coins in contestant’s jars. The coins
counted as positive votes, with pennies counting as one point, nickels
as five points, dimes as 10 points, and quarters as 25 points. All
paper cash was worth the face value in negative points.
O’Toole finished as the champion with a positive 4,450 points,
while Shepherd was second with a positive 3,316 points.
Other Cowley employees involved in the voting were Shayla McDonald
(1,177 points), Sue Saia (655 points), Vince DeGrado (316 points),
Cathy Hendricks (92 points) and Greg Nichols (negative 4,097 points).
In mathematics, Pi serves as the symbol for the ratio of the circumference
of a circle to its diameter. Pi is a transcendental number, meaning
it will repeat indefinitely without ever appearing exactly the same;
however, Pi is usually calculated to 3 digits, 3.14. Therefore, Pi
day is celebrated on March 14.
