Pin in FaceCowley’s Pi Day raises $391

Cowley College Mu Alpha Sigma Chi raised a total of $391 during its annual Pi Day on Thursday. The event is part of national Pi Day.

Voting was done by putting coins or bills in the contestants jars. The coins counted as positive votes, with pennies counting as one point, nickels as five points, dimes as 10 points, and quarters as 25 points. All paper cash was worth the face value in negative points.

The top-two point getters, Uwe Conrad, mathematics instrutor and club sponsor, and Keoki Waipa,a student and club member at Mulvane, received a pie in the face. Titus DeGraff, club president at Mulvane Campus also received an honorary pie in the face. Conrad finished as the champion and Waipa was second.

In mathematics, Pi serves as the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is a transcendental number, meaning it will repeat indefinitely without ever appearing exactly the same; however, Pi is usually calculated to 3 digits, 3.14. Therefore, Pi day is celebrated on March 14.

JeopardyMath & Science Club Members Play Jeopardy

During the February meeting, Math and Science Club members at Mulvane used the CPS system to have a Jeopardy Contest.

Keoki Waipa and Greg Anderson were the winners of the Math. Greg won a copy of “Matrix Reloaded” and Keoki won “Space Odyssey 2001”. The game included questions on Math History, College Algebra, and Statistics.

CrockpotA Bit of International Cuisine

The Math and Science Club at Mulvane sponsored a Crockpot Palooza fundraiser on November 5th, featuring "Dishes Around the World". The turn-out for the event was successful. Some of the dishes served included, chili, Spaghetti, Gumbo, Lose Meat Sandwiches, Meat balls, Salmon spread, and Corn Chowder. The student Ambassadors had a bake sale and PTK sold sodas. USD 263 Alternative School students and staff were also invited.

Hover CraftHover Craft Competition

Members of the Math and Science Club at the Mulvane Center participated in a hovercraft building competition at their monthly meeting, Wednesday, October 1st. Faculty advisor, Uwe Conrad, provided pizza for the group.

President Titus DeGraaf supplied the materials, tools and plans for the project. Twelve students divided up into two teams and each team constructed a hovercraft. The group then moved outside to so that each team could prove that their design would indeed sustain itself and support weight. This turned out to be the most entertaining (and dangerous) part of the project. Both proved to be successful and the competition was declared a draw.

The Math and Science Club at Mulvane is open to all students and meets the first Wednesday of every month from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Room 106.
