Director of Instructional Technology

Location: Arkansas City or Wichita

Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Position Reports To: Associate Vice President for Distance Learning and Site Management

 

Job Summary:

The Director of Instructional Technology serves as a support resource for Cowley College faculty. Responsibilities include: support for teaching with technology and course design, such as relevant instructional technology techniques on how to use and apply educational technology tools to enhance student learning within online learning environments. The coordinator will research, design, develop, and facilitate group and one-on-one professional development activities for faculty; including trainings, consultations, workshops and support documentation. Provide front line user support for education technology tools, assist faculty in integrating technology into the online classroom. Serve as the R&D liaison on instructional technology trends, monitor developments in the use of current and emerging instructional technologies while promoting the appropriate use of educational technology.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with faculty in the use of technology to enrich on-campus, online, and hybrid/flipped courses.
  • The Director will be responsible for administering training and coaching to faculty, designing and running faculty development programs and events, exploring new and emerging technologies, promoting stories of faculty success, and working across the College to address complex educational issues. 
  • Collaborate with instructors to enhance courses through innovative pedagogical design.
  • Design and develop an academically rich instructor training experience with attention to content mastery and creative pedagogy, ensuring strong continuity through the learning objectives.
  • Serve as the key resource person for all andragogy at Cowley, ensuring cutting-edge and evidence-based approaches are used in the development and implementation of courses.
  • Provide and verifies training of online instructors and coordinates and conducts training for online instructors in the development of online materials and methods.
  • Provide assistance to faculty, for the use of online teaching and learning methods to supplement face-to-face classes.
  • Conduct summative and formative assessments of online teaching abilities, recommend opportunities for improving those abilities.
  • Conduct needs analysis for new workshops, training, and professional development.
  • Conduct quality assessment of workshops, training and professional development and improve and refine same based on assessment results.
  • Sustain continuous quality improvement processes for all key aspects of the instructional technology support function.
  • Work with faculty and staff to develop, select and deliver professional development.
  • Identify technology needs for current and future professional development training offerings.
  • Communicate with all other college support services (Registrar, Admissions, Library, Bookstore, Student Services) to coordinate support for online instructors, students and potential students in an attempt to make the entire online education experience user-friendly, effective and seamless.
  • Explore tools to create asynchronous video that will enhance instructor presence.  These tools will be used to create instructional video, give feedback on assignments, or engage learners with content.
  • Keep abreast of new developments and research in online education and shares this information with instructors.
  • Coordinate online learning information, materials and updates with web designer.
  • Ensure that online course layouts and syllabi comply with college and departmental policies and practice.
  • Serve on College committees related to online learning.
  • Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees, vendors and/or any other representatives of external organization.
  • Comply with all College policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement Higher Learning Commission practices to maintain online education accreditation and maintain our NC-SARA (State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement) membership agreement.
  • Assist the Associate Vice President for Distance Learning and Site Management by performing other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of alternative instructional strategies, particularly with Quality Matters design standards.
  • Ability and knowledge to provide a team approach for planning, development and operation of the department.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
  • Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Exceptional presentation and communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to independently organize and prioritize work. Work well under deadline pressures.
  • Excellent human relations skills. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design models, and instructional technology tools and applications for traditional and adult learners; specifically LMS, web conferencing, building interactive modules.
  • Ability to lead continuous quality improvement: understand root cause analysis,

 

Required Education Background:
Master’s Degree in Education, Instructional Technology, preferred. Bachelor's degree in same with significant achievement in field considered.

Required Experience:

  • Teaching and training experience in face-to-face and online environments.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the design and facilitation of faculty development support activities pertaining to online learning, preferably at the college level.
  • Primary contributor in course development projects (in-person and online) partnering with content experts and other faculty/trainers.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful creation and management of online courses or training.
  • Established background in multiple LMS/CMS, especially Blackboard.
  • Experience in managing, marketing and operating online education or training programs, preferred.

 
Supervisory Requirements: The Director of Instructional Technology will directly supervise the Learning Management System Administrator.

 

Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; ability to move freely around the campus and outreach centers; ability to lift up to 20 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, reach and grasp as required to perform responsibilities; ability to drive motor vehicle; and ability to work on the computer for long periods of time. 

 

Work Environment: Work performed in an office environment.
