I couldn't afford the luxury of going away to school and maturing. You know what I mean; not studying the first semester. As I was putting myself through school, I needed to make every credit hour count. Cowley was perfect. I received a music scholarship, which paid for my books. I could stay at home and work part-time at the New Era flour mill. Cowley was inexpensive but gave me a quality education. The test of that was transitioning to Wichita State in my major "Accounting." It was not an issue because Cowley's program was strong and gave me an excellent foundation. That's why we wanted to establish a scholarship; to make it easier for students to work their way through college, so perhaps the serious students could enjoy their college years a little more than working and struggling all day. Cowley provided a great opportunity for me and I appreciated it.

When I was 17, a man named "Doc" Nelson gave me a break, which consequently set the course my life would take from then on. I was an ACHS senior with an Honour's pass and a keen scientific mind and Dr. Gwen Nelson, President of "JuCo" had just agreed to let me attend Freshman Physics free of charge, knowing I couldn't afford the tuition. I eventually went on to become a Nuclear Engineer and later a successful businessman. A few years ago, I set up a scholarship for CCCC students, hoping that somehow I could pay back a part of that kindness.
