International Admissions

The I-20 is a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status for those who wish to study in the U.S. The I-20 form must be taken to the American embassy or consulate when you apply for a visa.

New International Students Must:

  1. Complete an Application for Admission - Click here!
    Fill out and submit an application for admission preferably at least three months before the start of the term in which you wish to enroll (unless you are transferring from another institution within the USA).

  2. Payment
    Cowley County Community College requires a US $7,000 deposit (the approximate cost for the first semester) for all new students from The Gambia, Nigeria and Kenya.  Cowley County Community College implemented this procedure to help ensure that our candidates from those countries are bona fide students with the financial ability to study in the U.S.  We are confident that this procedure will not be a significant burden for students who truly have the financial means to pursue an education in the U.S.  When ready to make the payment of US $7,000, please click here cowley.peertransfer.comWe will not process paperwork for an I-20 until this payment is received in our Business Office.

    If a student enrolls in classes at Cowley County Community College but owes less than the US $7,000 deposit they paid previously, the overpayment will not be refunded.  Instead, the overpayment will be applied to the student’s next semester of enrollment.  If a student transfers to another institution after completing their first semester of enrollment at Cowley County Community College, they will be eligible for a refund of any balance left in their account, which will be applied to their Cowley issued Discover Debit card.

    Upon receiving their VISA, all other international students who do not have a Cowley College scholarship offer will be required to pay their first semester ($7,000 US), in full, prior to arriving to Cowley College.   Scholarship students shall make appropriate payment arrangements according to their scholarship agreement. This can be done at cowley.peertransfer.com. Each subsequent semester will require payment, or payment plan arrangements prior to the first day of class.  Failure to remit payment by the due date will result in termination of the students’ F-1 VISA.

    How to request a Refund
    The application fee of $100 is not refundable.  However, if you wish to receive a refund of the $6,900 deposit and cancel your admission, please return your unused I-20 with a letter requesting a refund with the correct mailing address.  We will only accept a signed request in order to refund your tuition deposit.  We will not accept refund requests by e-mail.  Please note that it may take up to 90 days to process a refund.

  3. Provide Transcripts
    Submit an official copy of your high school (secondary school) academic transcripts with an English translation of the grades and grading scale. Transcript MUST have leaving/graduation date.

  4. Diploma or Equivalent
    Submit an official copy of high school diploma.

  5. Passport
    Students must submit a copy of their passport.

  6. Show English Proficiency
    Submit evidence of English language proficiency. Students must meet one of the following criteria to demonstrate proficiency:

    1. Obtain a satisfactory score on the TOEFL test. Internet Based (iBT) = 61, Paper-based (PBT) = 500, Computer Based (CBT) = 173.  Cowley's TOEFL code is 6008.

    2. TSE (Test of Spoken English) score of 4 or higher.

    3. A minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 5.0.http://www.ielts.org

      "IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations."

    4. Have attended and graduated from an American high school within the United States and have maintained a minimum 2.0 CGPA (cumulative grade point average).

    5. Students from nationally recognized English speaking countries do not need to submit  any of the above stated documents.

  7. Upon arrival students must complete a Compass Placement test in Math and English for placement in these two subjects.

  8. Submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship - Download
    Submit a completed "Affidavit of Sponsorship" to Student Services. You must demonstrate that you, or your sponsor, are able to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, travel, insurance and miscellaneous personal expenses while here in this country. The Affidavit of Sponsorship form must be submitted with a seal from the sponsor's bank.

  9. Carry Current Health Insurance
    Per college policy, all international students are required to carry Cowley's health insurance, from the college’s designated insurance provider. The cost of the health insurance policy will be billed automatically each semester to the students account. Specific details regarding this plan can be found at: International Health Insurance Plan

  10. Upon arrival, students will be scheduled for a Quantiferon TB test with the campus nurse. Following a positive test result, a chest x-ray and possible medication, will be required.

Transfer Students Must: (those who have previously attended a different US college)

Be aware your college transcript must be mailed directly from your previous college to Cowley. Students seeking International college credit must submit an official WES translation.

    Students must submit a copy of their passport.

  6. Show English Proficiency
    Transfer students may demonstrate English proficiency by either of the methods listed below:

    • Complete English Composition I from an accredited college or university with a grade of "C" or higher.
      or
    • Have a satisfactory recommendation from an Intensive English program at a previous college.

  7. Students must complete a Compass Placement test in Math and English for placement in these two subjects

  8. Submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship - Download
    Submit a completed "Affidavit of Sponsorship" to Student Services. You must demonstrate that you, or your sponsor, are able to cover tuition, fees, books, housing, travel, insurance and miscellaneous personal expenses while here in this country.   9. Proof of Good Standing - Download
    If you are transferring to Cowley from a school within the USA, you must provide proof that you are currently in status with no pending INS issues and do not owe money to any American college.

  10. Carry Current Health Insurance

  11. Prior to Enrollment, students must show proof of a current negative QFT (Quantiferon Tuberculosis Test) and/or a clear chest x-ray. If none is available, arrangements will be made at a local lab for this test. International Health Insurance Plan
