A scholarship in the memory of John M. DeVore
has been established at Cowley by the estate of the late Jasper and
Beatrice DeVore. John Martin DeVore was born in December 1954 in Arkansas
City, the second of five children born to Jasper and Beatrice DeVore.

He attended Arkansas City schools through high school, before graduating from
Cowley in the 1970s with a degree in agri-business. John died in December 1979
in a farming accident. He left behind his wife, Marjorie, and two children, Jennifer
and John.
It is a natural extension of a 60-year relationship between Cowley and the DeVore
family to help Cowley County Community College extend these kinds of enriching
opportunities to others through a scholarship contribution. The DeVore family
has been involved with Cowley through supporting the arts programs, donating
pasture rocks for landscaping, serving on several executive committees, and as
students.
John’s father, Jasper DeVore, graduated from then-Arkansas City Junior
College in 1942 when the college was still located in the basement of the former
Arkansas City High School. John’s mother, Beatrice, took various classes
from 1976 through 2001. His sisters, several cousins, nieces, and nephews have
attended Cowley through the years. Most recently, John’s son, John (DeVore)
Miller, attended Cowley in the welding technology program.

This scholarship is intended to reward students with a similar desire to John’s
in obtaining their education. It is the family’s hope to continue the DeVore
family tradition by establishing this scholarship in John’s name in honor
of his memory and as a tribute to the future generations of students who will
pass through Cowley.
