Grammy Award nominee Barbara Higbie will make her
symphony debut March 28 when she performs with the Winfield Regional
Symphony in a concert at Cowley. The performance is sponsored by the
college and part of the Heartland Arts Series.
Higbie, a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and championship fiddle player
as well as pianist and composer, will be performing as part of the Flint Hills
Gathering, a series of singer-songwriter workshops and performances March 29-30.
All workshops will be held at Cowley. The singer-songwriter workshop is sponsored
by the college and is based on a concept by Swannanoa College in North Carolina.
Gary Gackstatter, conductor of the Winfield Regional Symphony, is preparing 15
charts for the March 28 concert. “We’ll feature her solo piano works,
her singer-songwriting works and her fiddling,” Gackstatter said. “She
also will be the first female solo artist ever to work with the symphony.” Gackstatter
said Higbie’s music was “very introspective.”
