Sing. Draw. Play. Dance. Create. These five action
words have been incorporated into a new logo for the cultural arts
series at the college. Heartland Arts at Cowley, whose committee of
college and community personnel began meeting last spring, adopted
a new logo a couple of months ago.
Computer Graphic Arts Instructor Denise Irwin designed the logo. Connie Bonfy,
director of institutional grants and arts programming at the college, said that
since the name of the cultural arts series was changing, it was a good time for
a new logo. “Denise and I met, and we listed all of the qualities of the
series,” Bonfy said. “Heartland arts celebrates growth and moving
forward.” Irwin presented several designs to the committee, which voted
on the final logo.
The image includes a leaf, the sun, and the five action words. “It’s
a very nice image,” Bonfy said. “It’s a stylized leaf and sun,
and the part of the stem is pointing upward, which indicates growth. The horizontal
text has a feel of representing the lay of the land.” Bonfy came up with
action words—sing, draw, play, dance—after attending a summer workshop. “Diane
Mataraza, the Florida-based instructor, believes that in branding, you should
use action words to demonstrate what you do,” Bonfy said. “Denise
developed and expanded upon the word idea. They look nice wrapped around the
leaf like that.” Bonfy hopes the logo represents the series for many years. “This
logo is interesting,” she said. “Ideally, we’ll go with it
for a long time.”
