Playing one of its toughest non-conference schedules
in years, the men’s basketball team has gotten off to a 5-4 start.
Despite going 0-3 at a tough Three Rivers Tournament, the young Tiger
squad looked impressive in road wins over Northern Oklahoma College
and Butler. Sophomore forward Damien Lolar from Arkansas City leads
Cowley in scoring with an average of 13.9 points per game. Fellow sophomore
Xavier Burnette of Topeka also is playing well and is averaging 11.3
points per game. Freshmen Tony Phillips from Wichita and Marcus Watts
from Clinton, S.C., highlight a talented freshman class. Phillips is
averaging 12.9 points and a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game, while
Watts is averaging 11.3 points and 4.4 rebounds.
The women’s team has used a solid defensive effort to win nine of its first
10 games. The Lady Tigers were ranked as high as No.13 in the NJCAA basketball
poll before losing to No. 3 ranked Seward County on Nov. 22. Cowley is allowing
opponents an average of just 47.4 points per game, and is outshooting the opposition
39.9 percent to 33.9 percent from the floor. Tamala Turner, from West Memphis,
Ark., and a transfer from Seminole College, leads the Lady Tigers in scoring
(12.6 points). Fellow sophomore post player Domenica Silva from Brazil is averaging
11.3 points per game, while sophomore forward Kara Pridey of Salina leads the
team with an average of 8.4 rebounds per game.
