October
Like most kids his age, Mark Gubichuk was impressionable as a youngster. Two
things happened to the Arkansas City native that have had a major influence on
him to this day. First, he landed a background chorus part in the musical “Brown
County Fair.” At the time, Gubichuk was a fourth-grader at Jefferson Elementary
School. Two years later, he auditioned and was chosen to perform with the Tulsa
Ballet, which was in Arkansas City for a performance at the college. Earlier
this semester, the sophomore theatre major was chosen as the October Student
of the Month. “I was kind of surprised,” said Gubichuk, the son of
Roger and Lynne Gubichuk and the grandson of Al Bronder of San Bernardino, Calif.,
and Jackie Tobin of Las Vegas, Nev. Gubichuk has one older brother, Daniel, 22,
who is a finance major at Wichita State University.
Gubichuk, who attends Cowley on the Patrick J. McAtee Scholarship, is a very
visible student. He is president of Act One Drama Club, is a Student Ambassador,
and is a member of the CC Singers and Phi Theta Kappa. But where he’s most
visible is on the Robert Brown Theatre stage. Gubichuk has had roles in two musicals—“How
to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” and “Into the Woods”—and
one play, “Cocktails With Mimi.” The stage also is where Gubichuk
is most comfortable. “I always liked to sing and being on stage in front
of people,” he said. Until a few months ago, Gubichuk was a pre-nursing
major. “I always wanted to influence people’s lives,” he said. “I
either wanted to be a teacher or something in the medical field. I wanted to
help people in some way.”
November
Andrea Iman is a very organized student. Sure, she isn’t the only student
who carries a planner around everywhere. Lots of students do that. Iman’s
day-to-day schedule is planned out almost to the minute, but she also knows where
she’s going and what she wants to do after she graduates next spring. Iman,
an Elkhart native and the daughter of Douglas and Barbara Iman, recently was
named Cowley’s November Student of the Month. The award is icing on the
cake for Iman, who has enjoyed her time at Cowley. “I think it’s
really cool, and I’m very honored,” said Iman, who has four brothers,
Richard 26, Roben 22, Sean 22, and Seph 10. “I remember seeing (September
2003 Student of the Month) Sarah Pritchard’s picture last year and thought
I want to be like her. It’s something you always want but don’t think
you’ll ever get.” Iman may be hours from home, but she has made Cowley
her home away from home.
Taking her classroom work seriously and getting involved on campus has helped
her become a visible student. The sophomore business administration major plans
to transfer to the University of Kansas and major in public relations, is very
busy. She is vice president of the Student Government Association, is a member
of Phi Theta Kappa, the Journalism Club, was on the National Dean’s List,
and has been on the President’s Honor Roll with a perfect 4.0 grade-point
average. She also is a Student Ambassador, is advertising manager for the Cowley
Press student newspaper, is a member of Phi Beta Lambda, participates in intramural
athletics, and is a student assistant in the Public Relations office. She was
a member of the Lady Tiger volleyball team this fall, and played on the softball
team as a freshman. Last month, she was one of five finalists for Queen Alalah
LXXIII.
