Having watched 17 years pass since its last All-American
in volleyball, Cowley ended the drought in the sport with the recent
selection of freshman middle hitter Fernanda Domingos as a National
Junior College Athletic Association Division II First-Team All-American.
Domingos, a 5-11 middle hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who earlier
was named the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division Freshman of the Year
and selected a first-team All-District J performer, posted single-match
highs of 21 kills, 13 blocks and 10 aces. She led the Lady Tigers in
aces (3.1) and blocks (5.7) per game, and finished second in kills
to Aubrey Sullivan with an average of more than 14 kills per game.
Domingos becomes just the fourth volleyball All-American in Cowley history and
the first since Peaches Harris in 1987. During the 2004 campaign, Cowley (21-17)
reached 20 wins for the 15th straight season and finished third in the Jayhawk
Conference Eastern Division with a record of 7-2. The Lady Tigers advanced to
the championship match of the District J Tournament before losing to Dodge City.
Losing only three players to graduation, the Lady Tiger volleyball team is expecting
even bigger things next season.
