Audra Maxine (Woolridge)
Stark, who helped spearhead an effort to establish Arkansas City Junior
College, and who later would be a member of the college’s first
graduating class, died June 15, 2005, in La Grange, Ga. She was 100.
Stark, one of 28 students who comprised the first graduating class
of ACJC in 1924, received the Outstanding Tiger Alumnus Award in 1994
for her “outstanding leadership and lifetime of service” to
the college. Upon finishing high school in Arkansas City in 1922, she
and her friends campaigned door to door to establish Arkansas City
Junior College, or what is now known as Cowley College. She was one
of 58 students to begin classes on Sept. 11, 1922. In 1974, she was
instrumental in establishing the Renn Memorial Library at the college.
Audra is survived by her sons Daniel C. Stark II and Jack Stark. Donations
may be sent to the Daniel and Audra Stark Memorial Scholarship Fund
at Cowley College.
Jim Salomon
Jim Salomon,
a long-time supporter of Cowley College, died July 15, 2005, in Arkansas
City. He was 58. He was born Nov. 16, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., the son
of Dr. James L. and Ahlene R. (Groves) Salomon. He was reared and educated
in Chicago and Wichita. He graduated from Wichita State with a bachelor’s
degree in business administration. Jim moved to Arkansas City in 1978.
He was the co-owner and chief executive officer of Gordon-Piatt Energy
Group at Strother Field, and presently was a co-owner and CEO of Good
Times Productions. Jim was a member of the Super Boosters and the Endowment
Board of Directors at Cowley College. Survivors include his wife Debbie
of the home; three daughters, Stephanie R. Newland of Arkansas City,
Crysta L. Snow of Wichita; and Lindsay S. Randle of Derby; a step-son,
Stefan Read of Arkansas City. Memorials have been established with
the American Heart Association and the Cowley College Endowment Fund.
Everett Malan
Everett Andrew Malan, 85, died June
17, 2005, in Arkansas City. Everett was born March 7, 1920, to William
and Naomi (Bonous) Malan on the family farm near Wentworth, Mo. He
served in World War II with the United States Army Air Corps. After
the war, he received his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from Southwest
Missouri State and a master’s degree at the University of Northern
Colorado. Everett married Rosalie Gibbons on Aug. 7, 1950. Everett
taught at Arkansas City High School and Arkansas City Junior College
(Cowley College) for several years. He became one of the driving forces
behind the continued development of the industrial technology department
at Cowley. Survivors include his wife Rosalie; a son Stuart A. Malan
both of the home.
Paula Elizabeth Corkins
Paula Elizabeth Corkins,
Class of 1956, died Aug. 26, 2005, in Texas. She was 69. She was born
on April 1, 1936, in Winfield, the daughter of Paul and Eno Craig.
She is survived by her children, Craig Dautrich, Lindsay Conley, Paul
Howard, Scott Howard.
