Basketball Seasons End in Region VI
The women’s basketball team’s dream
season, which included a school-record 23-game winning streak, came to
an abrupt end with a 59-50 loss to Barton County in the second-round
of the Region VI Tournament played at the Salina Bicentennial Center
on March 14. Despite the loss to Barton County, the Lady Tigers finished
Todd Clark’s first season as head coach with a record of 30-2.
The 30 wins ties for the second-most wins in school history.
Picked to finish third in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, Cowley won
the conference title and went unbeaten (18-0) in conference play for the first
time since the 1981-82 season. For his efforts, Clark was named Jayhawk Conference
Eastern Division Coach of the Year. Sophomore forwards Tamala Turner (13.0 points,
7.0 rebounds) and Domenica Silva (10.9 points, 5.8 rebounds) were recognized
for their stellar play by being named first-team all-conference. Sophomore Marina
Caran finished her Cowley career as the 20th all-time leading scorer in Cowley
history with 653 points. The Lady Tigers will lose 10 sophomores from this year’s
team. Despite never trailing in the second half of its game against top-seeded
Garden City in the second round of the Region VI Tournament played at the Salina
Bicentennial Center, the eighth-seeded Cowley men had their season come to an
end with a heartbreaking 90-85 overtime loss to the Broncbusters on March 13.
Cowley came on strong at the end of the season as it won six of its final seven
regular season games entering the Region VI Tournament.
The Tigers ended the season with a record of 21-11 overall and finished in a
tie for third in the Jayhawk East with a record of 12-6. Sophomore Damien Lolar
made the most of his one season at Cowley as he tied Kamau Alexander for the
20th-most points (519) scored in a single season in Tiger history. Lolar was
named a first-team all-conference performer for his efforts. Freshman Julio Anthony
had a strong second semester as he finished the season with a team-high 59 three-pointers,
and averaged 10.2 points per game. Anthony was named an honorable mention all-conference
performer. Cowley will lose five sophomores from this year’s team, but
will return several talented athletes.
