Cowley Women Place 11th
at Nationals, Men Place 15th
Led by freshman Linet Birir’s 10th place
finish, the Cowley College women’s cross country team placed
11th at the NJCAA National Championships held at the University of
Kansas’ Rim Rock Farm on Nov. 5. “Considering we started
the season struggling to have enough girls to field a team, we were
very excited with how the girls did,” Cowley head coach Mark
Phillips said. Birir, who came to Cowley from Eldama Ravine, Kenya,
earned Second-Team NJCAA All-American honors for her efforts. Birir
finished with a time of 19:08.4. Freshman Patricia Dailey finished
44th for Cowley with a time of 20:39.2, while Katie Wagner (21:25.8),
Ryan Rapp (21:37.3), and La-Nation McCray (24:28.8) each ran personal
best times at the meet.
The Cowley men finished 15th out of 25 teams and were led by Arkansas City freshman
Dustin Garcia’s 53rd place finish. Garcia ran his second fastest time of
the season as he finished with a time of 27:34.7. Sophomore Scott Olson (27:56.3)
finished 72nd for the Tigers, while freshman Ferrien Harris (28:15.1) finished
81st. Freshman Arnold Mombosi, the Tigers top-runner during the first half of
the season, did not compete at full strength and finished 150th. Despite not
finishing in the top-10, Phillips saw a lot of progress from the freshman dominated
squad. “With a group that is so freshman heavy, if they take what they
learned this year we are set up to be better next year,” Phillips said.
