
Men’s Cross Country
The Tiger men won its first ever Region VI Championship and captured
its second straight Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division title. The
team qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in Ina, IL, where
it finished fifth in the nation.
Daniel Maina finished his career at Cowley as the most decorated runner in Tiger
history. For the second straight year Maina finished second in the nation and
earned NJCAA First-Team All-American honors. Maina (23:30) nearly was the national
champion as he lost in a photo finish to Rend Lake’s Ben Cheruiyot (23:29).
Stanley Mugo also completed a stellar two seasons at the school as he finished
as the Jayhawk East Conference runner-up to Maina.
Mauricio Morales earned Coaches Association All-American honors by placing 32nd
in the nation with a time of 26:03. Johnny Purvis (26:16) and Brett Koehn (26:29)
also earned Coaches Association All-American honors as they placed 41st and 46th,
respectively at the national championships.
Women’s Cross Country
The Lady Tiger cross country team had another strong season as they finished
eighth at the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships in Ina, Ill.
Irene Kosgei, who was the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division champion
for the second consecutive year, placed 31st at the national meet. Also
doing well at the national meet was Jeniffer Cherono and Ashley Cronin.

Cherono earned NJCAA First-Team All-American honors for the second year
in a row, as she placed 13th with a time of 17:56 in the women’s
race. Cronin (18:55) placed 34th and garnered Coaches Association All-American
honors.
Volleyball
Competing at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Scottsdale,
AZ. for the third straight year, the Cowley College volleyball team
finished fifth in the nation. The Lady Tigers were led by Jayhawk Conference
Eastern Division Most Valuable Player Lilian Rezende and the conference’s
Freshman of the Year in Lucia Cizmarova. Both Rezende and Cizmarova
were named to the all-tournament team at nationals.
Cowley freshmen Victoria Green and Crystal Garman also had stellar seasons
as they earned All-District M honors. Cowley finished the 2007 season
with a record of 31-6.
Men’s Basketball
The Tiger men’s basketball team has gotten off to a fast start
under new head coach Steve Eck. Cowley, which was ranked No. 25 in the
preseason basketball rankings, won its first six games and was 7-1 through
its first eight games of the season.
The Tigers had five players averaging double figures in points through
the first eight games. Cowley, which was picked second in the Jayhawk
East preseason poll, will open conference play by hosting Kansas City
at 7 p.m. on Jan. 5. The Tigers will host six-time defending conference
champion Coffeyville Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
Sporting several new faces, the Cowley College women’s basketball
team began the 2007-08 season with a record of 3-3. The Lady Tigers are
led in scoring by a pair of freshmen as Elena Yankova averages 11.7 points
per game, while Gabrielle Curtis is averaging 10.9 points.
Cowley will open conference play Jan. 5 at home against Kansas City at
5 p.m.
