Obituaries
Berklie Boggs Perico, Class of 1956, died Oct. 2, 2007, in Cottonwood,
Arizona. He was 71. Perico was born in Arkansas City to Harry and Ruth
Boggs Perico. He is survived by his wife, Rozana, a sister Phyllis, his
sons Douglas and wife Lisa, and Bradley. A daughter, Lisa and husband
Dino, a step-son Mike, and wife Andrea, a step-daughter Lisa, three grandsons,
five granddaughters, one great grandson. His son, Gregory, and sister,
Freda, proceeded him in death.
He was an enrolled member of the Fort Sill Chiricahua Apache Tribe. He
attended Arkansas City Junior College, Wichita State University, and
Pittsburg State University, where he received his master’s degree.
He was inducted into the first class of the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame
in 2000. Perico was an All-American football player at Arkansas City
Junior College in 1954. He was an all-state junior college player twice,
and served as the Tigers’’ co-captain in 1956. He also was
the Tigers’’ punter, and averaged 41.6 yards per kick. Perico
also excelled at basketball, earning All-American honors in 1956. He
was named to the all-state team, and led ACJC to a third-place finish
at the 1955 national tournament. Perico also was a two-time letterman
in golf, helping the Tigers to two state championships. At the time of
his induction, Perico was employed by the U.S. Government, Department
of Interior, and Bureau of Indian Affairs. He worked for the Department
of Interior for more than 30 years.
Helen Irene Manka Storbeck, died Oct. 1, 2007, in Wichita. She was 80. Storbeck was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Peabody, the daughter of Gladys Glessner Burton Manka and Gilbert Arthur Manka. She was a published author and judged quilting competitions throughout the U.S. and abroad. Survivors include her son, Chris B. Storbeck; son, Scott N. Storbeck; sisters, Thelma L. Warkentine and Marjorie J. Morgan; brother, Roy J. Manka, all of Peabody; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Robert Storbeck, who was a member of Cowley College’s Board of Trustees from 1994 until his death on Jan. 24, 1997; son, Todd Robert Storbeck; and brother, Lyle W. Manka.
