Pratt named Cowley’s March Student of the Month
Involved in numerous campus activities and considered a true leader,
Cowley College sophomore Amanda Pratt was recently named the college’s
March Student of the Month.
Pratt, the daughter of Alvin and Kathy Pratt, is a communications major
from Wellington. She has a younger sister, Jeanie 15, which is a sophomore
at Wellington High School. Grandparents are, Alvin and Jeanette Pratt
and Gary and the late Judy Murphey of Iola.
At Cowley, she serves as the Opinions Editor for the Cowley Press, is
President of the Tyger Tawk Communications Club, is a member of Phi Theta
Kappa, a Student Government Association representative, and a resident
assistant in the Oscar Kimmell Dormitory.
She has excelled academically at Cowley as she has an overall grade point
average of 3.95.
Pratt is honored to receive the award.
“It’s a good feeling to be recognized for all of the things you
do at the school,” Pratt said.
As a freshman at Cowley, Pratt took a Mass Media class from Cowley Press
advisor Dave Bostwick. While in the class she heard about an opening
for new staff members on the student newspaper. Although she had no previous
experience, Pratt thought it would be something she would enjoy.
“I picked it up pretty fast and it has been a great experience,” Pratt
said. “I am having a lot of fun doing it.”
She has been pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere on the Cowley campus
and has thoroughly enjoyed the teachers at the school.
“There is a great variety of teachers here,” Pratt said. “I
have several favorites.”
Pratt has drawn inspiration from several people in her life, including
her parents and her grandmother Judy Murphy, who passed away when she
was 11. She said her grandmother taught her to live each day to the fullest,
while she admires her parents for their strength. She also has great
respect for her former sixth grade teacher, Ms. Susan Wirsig, who believed
in every student she taught.
In her free time, she enjoys reading Harry Potter books and listening
to music. She also enjoys unwinding by watching Beavis and Butthead reruns.
After graduating from Cowley, Pratt plans to attend Baker University
in Baldwin City, Kan. She is considering attending Law School after obtaining
her Bachelor’s Degree.
She hopes to become a public relations consultant, but is also entertaining
the idea of becoming a media lawyer.
“I like both of those professions,” Pratt said. “The media
to me is interesting, and being able to represent other people and continue
writing also interests me.”
No matter which career path she chooses, the future is bright for Cowley’s
March Student of the Month.
