Large turnout for ping pong tournament
With 20 students taking part in Cowley College’s ping pong tournament
held Tuesday in the Game Room, Tiger men’s tennis players took
down the competition.
Sophomore Sean Cobble finished first in the singles tournament, while
Travis Truax placed second.
The championship match was back and forth all the way. Cobble pulled
out the first set 21-17, and Truax pulled away late in the second set
for a 21-15 win.
The decisive third set was a thriller. Cobble was up 19-14 before Truax
closed to within one point at 19-18. Cobble then finished off the set
and the victory by winning the last two points of the match. Cobble won
$30 for first place, while Truax won $20 for second place.
Cobble then teamed with fellow Tiger tennis player Richard Filkuka to
defeat the tandem of Truax and Boomer Saia in the championship match
of the doubles tournament.
Cobble and Filkuka squeaked out the win of the first set by a score of
21-18, and the second set was even tighter. Late in the second set the
team of Truax and Saia were up 18-17 before Cobble and Filkuka won four
of the last five points to win the set and match. Cobble and Filkuka
took home $10 each for first place, while Truax and Saia took home $5
each for second place.
