Portfolio Reception capped with TMU concert
About 50 people enjoyed the works of Cowley College writers at the Creative
Writing Portfolio Reception on Thursday evening. Each student in a writing
class created a portfolio of their works, and guests perused the works
and visited with Cowley’s writers. The evening was capped off with
a performance by the Temporal Mechanics Union, which began in the Wright
Room at the reception and moved in a conga line to the theater.
The percussion ensemble sponsored a poetry contest on the theme of timelessness
earlier in the year, and Creative Claws members were invited to submit
works. The winners were presented with their gifts at the concert: Michelle
Sommerhauser, first place; Emily Burkholder, second place; and Kate Kearns,
third place.
Sommerhauser presented her poem to the accompaniment of original music
by TMU director, Chris Mayer. The evening’s concert, Visions of
the Future Past, included original works by Mayer, Thomas Govert, Wayne
Farley, as well as poetry by Sommerhauser and John Virden.
