Elementary education major named Student of the Month
Abby Garcia hopes to make an impact in the lives of young students after graduating from college. In the meantime the sophomore elementary education major is making quite the impact on the Cowley College campus as she was recently named the school’s December Student of the Month.
Garcia is the daughter of Martin and Suzanne Garcia of Wichita, KS. She has two younger brothers, Garrett Lange 17, and Elijah 9, as well as three older siblings, Martin Jr., Raquel, and Angelica. Grandparents are Gudren and Floyd Blaske of Wichita, and Sharyon and Jim Miller of Derby.
Prior to coming to Cowley she attended Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita where she participated in tennis for four years, softball for one year, and was involved with the yearbook staff.
As a senior member of the Bishop Carroll tennis squad she teamed with fellow Cowley student Ashley Huslig to place eighth in doubles at the state tournament. Her stellar play helped Bishop Carroll finish as the state runner-up.
She came to Cowley along with Huslig to play tennis. After spending her freshman season as a member of the nationally ranked Lady Tiger tennis team, Garcia currently serves as the vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa and also a Cowley Tutor.
She has a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of the President’s Honor Roll.
“Abby has a “Cowley Character”. She is positive, hardworking, helpful, and kind,” director of early childhood education Janet Davidson said. “Abby is willing to go the extra mile in all that she does. She is a servant leader that is willing to put others first and push them to the completion of their goal.”
Garcia loves interacting with children and has been influenced by Davidson to first pursue becoming a preschool teacher before possibly teaching at the college level in the future.
“I love the way Mrs. Davidson teaches and interacts with her students,” Garcia said.
Garcia does student teaching at Frances Willard Elementary in Arkansas City and also teaches swim lessons to children through the Ark City Recreation Commission.
She recently helped with canvasing for a Cowley College campus in Sumner County and also assisted with the food drive for victims of the flooding in Mulvane.
Garcia was named Student of the Month one month after her former doubles partner Ashley Huslig.
“This means a lot to me to be recognized as Student of the Month when there are so many deserving students,” Garcia said. “This recognition also means a lot to my family.”
Garcia has thoroughly enjoyed her experience at Cowley and is trying to talk her younger brother, Garrett, to come to Cowley and compete for the school’s wrestling program that will begin in the fall of 2017.
“I wish I didn’t have to leave Cowley and that it was a four-year school,” Garcia said.
After Cowley Garcia plans to transfer to Emporia State University.
