OVERLAND PARK, KS - After starting 4-0 in the Jayhawk
Conference Eastern Division, the Cowley County Community College baseball
team lost its first conference game when it split a doubleheader at Johnson
County on Sunday.
In the first game, Cowley scored a run in the top of
the fifth to tie the score at 2-2 and give starting pitcher Josh Wahpepah
a no decision. Wahpepah allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings
pitched.
Adam Henry came in to pitch in the fifth and gave up
two runs in the inning, and two more in the sixth as Johnson County came
away with a 6-2 win. Only two of the four runs allowed by Henry were
earned as the Tigers committed four errors.
Cowley was limited to four hits
in the game. Colby Overstreet’s solo homer was the Tigers’ lone
bright spot offensively.
In the nightcap, Cowley scored five runs in the top
of the second inning and never looked back as it gained a split of the
doubleheader with an 11-5 win.
Freshman Trace Larman (2-1) won
his second straight decision on the mound as he allowed just one run
in 5 1/3 innings. Hunter Harrigan led Cowley’s offensive attack
as he went 2-4 with a home run. Matt Webb and Chad Ogden added two
hits apiece.
Cowley is now 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk
East. Johnson County moves to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday when they host Independence
in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at City Ball Park.
