Cowley baseball suffers first conference defeat

OVERLAND PARK, KS - After starting 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, the Cowley County Community College baseball team lost its first conference game when it split a doubleheader at Johnson County on Sunday.

In the first game, Cowley scored a run in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 2-2 and give starting pitcher Josh Wahpepah a no decision. Wahpepah allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings pitched.

Adam Henry came in to pitch in the fifth and gave up two runs in the inning, and two more in the sixth as Johnson County came away with a 6-2 win. Only two of the four runs allowed by Henry were earned as the Tigers committed four errors.

Cowley was limited to four hits in the game. Colby Overstreet’s solo homer was the Tigers’ lone bright spot offensively.

In the nightcap, Cowley scored five runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back as it gained a split of the doubleheader with an 11-5 win.

Freshman Trace Larman (2-1) won his second straight decision on the mound as he allowed just one run in 5 1/3 innings. Hunter Harrigan led Cowley’s offensive attack as he went 2-4 with a home run. Matt Webb and Chad Ogden added two hits apiece.

Cowley is now 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk East. Johnson County moves to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday when they host Independence in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at City Ball Park.
