Tiger baseball team beats Butler, loses to No. 2-ranked Seminole

Playing a pair of home games over Spring Break, the No. 8-ranked Cowley College baseball team defeated Butler 8-6 on Wednesday, but lost to second-ranked Seminole State College 12-10 on Thursday.

Against Butler, Cowley freshman Jeremy Sheehan had his second straight strong outing on the mound as he allowed just one hit and one run in six innings. However, for the second straight time, Sheehan left with the lead but ended up with a no decision as the Grizzlies scored five runs off three Tiger relievers in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6.

“Sheehan threw really well,” Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. “It was too bad our bullpen came in and messed it up for him.”

Cowley rallied to score two runs on just one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning as it came back to win 8-6. J.J. Dellinger (3-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win, while Matt Van Deelen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his fifth save.

Cowley pounded out 13 hits. Deik Scram and Pagee Hartley each finished with three hits and a run batted in.

On Thursday, Cowley played second-ranked Seminole State College. The Tigers defeated Seminole 4-3 in the season opener on Feb. 16. However, five errors and 17 men left on base turned out to be too much to overcome as Cowley lost 12-10.

“It was an ugly game,” Burroughs said. “We had too many errors and left too many guys on base.”

Cowley starter Landon West (1-2) took the loss as he allowed seven runs in three innings.

The Tigers rallied from an 8-3 deficit to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. But with runners at first and second and two outs, Brandon Harrigan grounded out to end the game.

Chad Ogden finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Harrigan added three hits and a run batted in.

Cowley is now 15-5 on the season. The Tigers will play eight conference games this week, beginning with Tuesday’s home doubleheader against Labette. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.

“This will be a big week for us,” Burroughs said.
