Cowley baseball splits two games with Fort Scott

One day after winning a pair of one-run games over Highland, the Cowley County Community College baseball team suffered a one-run defeat (4-3) to Fort Scott before coming back to win the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader played at City Ball Park 9-0.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Adam Henry allowed just one run in the first six innings, and Cowley led 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh.

After walking just two of the 23 batters he faced through the game’s first six innings, Henry walked two of the first three batters he faced to start the seventh. The walks came back to haunt him as back-to-back one-out run-scoring singles by Ryan Yates and Jason Rineheart tied the game at 3-3.

Tyler Dokes then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Nick Jones with the go-ahead run. Cowley’s Travis Kliewer came in to strike out Lincoln Kent to avoid further damage.

However, the damage had been done as the Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Fort Scott’s Matt Brown limited Cowley to six hits and three runs in the complete-game victory.

Henry (2-2) allowed seven hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings. He also struck out four and walked four in suffering his second loss of the season. Clay Blevins and Brian Freeman drove in a run a piece for the Tigers.

In game two, Cowley got a strong outing on the mound from Landon West (1-1) as the freshman allowed three hits and no runs in six innings to pick up his first win of the season. The right hander struck out six and walked two. Jordan Garner struck out two in an inning of scoreless relief.

The Tigers gave West more than enough run support by scoring two runs in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth.

Designated hitter Deik Scram did a solid job in the leadoff spot as he went 2-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Left fielder Dwayne White also continued to swing the bat much better of late as he went 2-3 with two run-scoring singles, and Kellen Linville and Colby Overstreet each had a triple.

The split of the doubleheader makes Cowley 20-10 overall and 12-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Fort Scott is now 15-19 overall and 8-10 in the East.

The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Neosho County Community College at 1 p.m.
