Barton County out-slugs Cowley 15-7

GREAT BEND — Playing Barton County, which is currently third in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division, the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division leading Cowley County Community College baseball team suffered a 15-7 defeat Wednesday in Great Bend.

Barton County jumped on Tiger starter Trey Randa for five runs in two innings as the Cougars grabbed an early 5-2 lead. However, Cowley got a two-run single from Dwayne White and a pair of run scoring singles from Hunter Harrigan and Chad Ogden in the top of the third inning to lead 6-5.

Brian Freeman blasted his team leading seventh home run to lead off the fifth, and Cowley led 7-5. The lead would be short-lived as the Cougars got a three-run homer from Andrew Small off Tiger reliever Landon West in the bottom of the fifth, to go back on top 8-7.

Barton scored two more runs in the sixth inning as Jeff Christy tripled in Wes Renfro and scored on a single by Jerry Cook to push the Cougars lead to 10-7.

The Cougars added four more runs in the seventh, and Renfro’s RBI triple in the eighth capped the scoring in Barton’s 15-7 win. Justin Randa (2-3) picked up the win for the Cougars as he allowed just one run in three innings of relief.

West (1-2) was charged with the loss as he allowed three runs in his three innings of relief.

White and Kellen Linville each had three hits for the Tigers as Cowley finished with 13 hits in the defeat. Renfro led Barton County at the plate by going 3-5 with five runs batted in.

Barton County is now 33-18 overall, while Cowley falls to 34-17.

Cowley will be back in action tonight when they play a doubleheader at Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa). The first game will begin at 5 p.m. The Tigers will then prepare to host its final regular season home game on Friday as they will host Butler County Community College in a single nine-inning game beginning at 3 p.m.
