Wahpepah named Jayhawk East MVP; five Tigers named first-team all-conference

In recent voting done by the coaches in the Jayhawk Conference, the Cowley County Community College baseball team had five players named to the first team in the Eastern Division.

Cowley’s Josh Wahpepah (11-1, 1.24 earned-run average), and Dustin Richardson (8-3, 2.04 ERA) were named to the first team as pitchers. Catcher Clay Blevins (.320 average, team-high 43 runs batted in), designated hitter Deik Scram (team-high .363 average, six home runs), and outfielder Dwayne White (.326 average, team-high 43 runs batted in) also were named to the first team.

“I felt like all of those guys are deserving to be on there,” Cowley assistant coach Darren Burroughs said. “It’s always satisfying to the guys to feel like their hard work has paid off.”

After being named the Eastern Division Freshman of the Year last season, Wahpepah was named the Eastern Division Most Valuable Player as a sophomore. The 6-5 right-hander has limited opponents to a .159 batting average and struck out 82 batters in 85 innings of work.

With Richardson also being named to the first team, two of the three pitching selections are Tigers.

“I think it’s a great accomplishment for them,” Burroughs said.

Cowley freshman Brian Freeman was an honorable mention selection at first base as he batted .343 with seven home runs and 26 runs batted in during the regular season.

Cowley, the Jayhawk East champion, still has some unfinished business as it will play Garden City at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Region VI Tournament at Wichita’s Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The tournament will run through Sunday. Tiger baseball games can be heard on KSOK FM 95.9.

“All of the personal awards are nice, but we are focused on this weekend,” Burroughs said.

Kansas City’s Steve Burleson was named the Eastern Division Coach of the Year, and Kansas City’s Jimmy Mojica was named the Eastern Division Freshman of the Year.

Jayhawk Conference Western Division champion Seward County swept the top awards in the West as Saints head coach Galen McSpadden was named Coach of the Year, pitcher Danny Vais was named Player of the Year, and Jason Van Kooten was selected Freshman of the Year.
