The list of accomplishments keeps growing for Josh
Wahpepah as the 6-5 right-handed pitcher recently was named a first-team
2004 NJCAA Division I Baseball All-American.
Wahpepah had a record of 11-1 and an earned run average
of 1.24 before losing both of his starts in the Region VI Tournament
in Wichita. He struck out 94 batters in 95 innings and held opponents
to a batting average of less than .200.
Along with being selected a first-team All-American,
he also was named the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division Player of the
Year, and an All-Region VI performer.
Last week, the Milwaukee Brewers
took Wahpepah in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft.
He signed a contract with the Brewers and is currently attending the
team’s mini camp
for this year’s draft picks in Phoenix, Ariz. He will then head
to Helena, Mont., for the team’s rookie camp along with fellow
Tiger Clay Blevins, who also signed with the Brewers.
Dodge City Community College outfielder
James Bennett was the only other Jayhawk Conference athlete to be named
a first-team All-American. Johnson County Community College designated
hitter Brett Kinning was named a third-team All-American, and Garden
City’s
Brandon Buckman and Cloud County’s Jared Goedart received honorable
mention recognition.
