Cowley signs big guard from North Carolina

Continuing to add quality recruits to its program, the Cowley County Community College men’s basketball team recently signed 6-4 guard Julio Anthony of Victory Christian High School in Charlotte, N.C., to a letter of intent.

Anthony was named the Freshman of the Year at Victory Christian, and was an All-State performer all four years. He helped lead his high school team to the Christian National Championship as a junior, and to back-to-back state titles to close out his high school career.

He played point guard, off guard and small forward for Victory Christian, and averaged 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals as a senior. Anthony is looking forward to coming to Cowley.

“I like the environment, and everyone I talked with at the school seemed to care about athletics and education,” Anthony said.

Anthony will be looked upon to help the Tigers make up for the loss of all-conference guards Francis Cuyler and Alex Elam.

“The thing that really impressed me about Julio is at 6-4, he is a very good-sized guard,” Cowley head coach Randy Smithson said. “He has excellent court vision and a feel for the game to go along with his athleticism. He’s a young man that wants to play high level basketball some day. He is also an excellent student and an excellent person.”
