Tigers win fifth straight, beat Barton County 13-5

Getting another strong outing from sophomore Jeremy Sheehan on the mound, and hitting a season-high three home runs, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College baseball team blasted Barton County 13-5 Tuesday at City Ball Park.

The win improves Cowley’s record to 5-0 at home and 8-4 overall. Barton County is now 8-5. The win was the Tigers fifth in a row.

“It was an encouraging sign,” Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. “Our kids are making progress.”

Sheehan allowed just one hit, a solo home run by Matt Coatman in the third inning, as he went a season-high five innings on the mound. The win improves Sheehan’s record to 5-0 on the season, and 12-0 in his career at Cowley.

“He is very competitive,” Burroughs said. “All he knows how to do is win. He just continues to get better.”

All three of the Tigers home runs came with two outs in a nine-run fifth inning as Cowley broke open a 2-1 ball game. Sophomore catcher Patrick D’ Aoust belted a grand slam in the inning, while Zach Berg hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Mitch McCuistion rounded out the home run barrage by hitting his second home run of the season.

Sophomore shortstop Brad Miller went 5-for-5 with two runs batted in, and has hits in each of his last eight at bats. Freshman outfielder Michael Dabbs also played well as he went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in.

Cowley will now prepare for a road doubleheader at Rose State College Thursday at 2 p.m.
