Getting solid pitching in both games of a doubleheader
at Labette on Saturday, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College baseball team
remained unbeaten in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with wins
of 5-1 and 3-0.
After suffering its first home loss of the season
with a 10-6 loss to Crowder College on Thursday, Cowley bounced back
to improve to 15-6 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk East.
Cowley scored four runs in the
first inning and cruised to the win of game one as Brad Miller started
on the mound for the Tigers and allowed five hits and no earned runs
en route to Cowley’s first
complete game of the season. Miller struck out seven and walked one in
improving to 2-0.
Miller helped his cause at the
plate by blasting a solo home run in the four-run first inning. The
home run by Miller ties him with Patrick D’Aoust for the team
lead in home runs with three. Mitch McCuistion also played well as
he went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.
In game two, Lance Hoge, J.C. Bredengerd, and Kyle
Thornton combined on a three-hit shutout. Hoge (2-1) picked up the win
as he allowed three hits in five innings. Bredengerd pitched a perfect
sixth inning of relief, and Thornton pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to
pick up his seventh save of the season.
The Tigers made the most of their four hits as they
got a two-run single by Brett Becker in the second inning, and a RBI
single by Nick Troilo in the fifth.
