After having two former players taken on the first
day of the Major League Baseball draft, the Cowley College baseball team
had five current players selected on the second day of the draft.
Cowley’s Tyler Fleming, Kyle Thornton, Michael Dabbs, Matt Peck,
and Kent Williamson followed former Tigers Dustin Richardson and Arkansas
City native Deik Scram into the draft.
Richardson was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth
round, while Scram was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round.
Another former Tiger, Hunter Harrigan, who recently
finished his senior season at Southern Illinois University, signed a
free agent contract with the Texas Rangers following the draft. Sophomore
All-American Brad Miller also recently signed a pro contract with the
Milwaukee Brewers.
Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs was glad to see so
many of his players get drafted by major league clubs.
“It was a good day for Cowley baseball,” Burroughs
said. “It’s neat to see these guys that are walking down
our hallways get a chance to play pro ball.”
Fleming (3-0, 0.00 ERA), who did
not allow an earned run in 16 2/3 innings pitched, was drafted by the
Texas Rangers in the 20th round. Thornton (school-record 16 saves,
0.93 ERA) was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 31st round; Dabbs
(.333 average, five home runs, 55 RBI’s) was drafted in the 38th
round by the Kansas City Royals; Peck (5-1, 4.06 ERA) was drafted in
the 42nd round by the Milwaukee Brewers; and Williamson (4-0, 2.92
ERA) was taken in the 46th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Fleming, Dabbs, Peck, and Williamson just completed
their freshman year, while Thornton was a sophomore.
