Hughes back with major league club

Travis Hughes, a standout pitcher on Cowley College’s World Series winning teams in 1997 and 1998, recently was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League, and rejoined the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Hughes joins the Nationals for the second time in 2005. During his first stint with the club, Hughes pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings in four relief appearances and went 1-0. He allowed just two hits and no walks, while striking out three.

Hughes, who stands 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, was 2-5 with 12 saves and a 2.97 earned-run average in 57 2/3 innings pitched with New Orleans. He posted a three-to-one strikeout ratio as he struck out 70 and walked just 22.

Hughes was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19 th round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, and made his major league debut with the Rangers last season. The Nationals claimed him off waivers on April 7.

Washington, who is 66-60 on the season, is 5 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the National League Eastern Division. However, Washington is just two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the race for the National League Wild Card.
