Travis Hughes, a standout pitcher
on Cowley College’s
World Series winning teams in 1997 and 1998, recently was recalled from
Triple-A New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League, and rejoined the Washington
Nationals on Wednesday.
Hughes joins the Nationals for the second time in 2005.
During his first stint with the club, Hughes pitched 4 1/3 scoreless
innings in four relief appearances and went 1-0. He allowed just two
hits and no walks, while striking out three.
Hughes, who stands 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, was 2-5
with 12 saves and a 2.97 earned-run average in 57 2/3 innings pitched
with New Orleans. He posted a three-to-one strikeout ratio as he struck
out 70 and walked just 22.
Hughes was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19
th round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, and made his major league
debut with the Rangers last season. The Nationals claimed him off waivers
on April 7.
Washington, who is 66-60 on the season, is 5 1/2
games behind Atlanta in the National League Eastern Division. However,
Washington is just two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the race
for the National League Wild Card.
