Preparing for its first fall scrimmages of the year,
the Cowley College baseball team will play host to five teams at the
Junior Spivey Labor Day Classic held Saturday and Sunday at City Ball
Park in Arkansas City.
Spivey played for Cowley in 1995 and 1996. He made
his major league debut June 2, 2001. He played 72 games in 2001 and helped
the Arizona Diamondbacks to the World Series title.
As the team’s starting second
baseman in 2002, Spivey batted .301 with 34 doubles, six triples, 16
home runs and 78 runs batted in. His stellar season led to his being
named to the National League All-Star team.
Spivey was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers after the
2003 season and batted .272 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 59 games
before being sidelined with a season-ending shoulder injury.
Spivey was traded from the Brewers to the Washington
Nationals on June 10, and was batting .232 with seven home runs, 24 runs
batted in, and a team-best nine stolen bases before landing on the disabled
list with a fractured right radius.
The Cowley baseball team will be split into two teams,
