Lady Tigers ride big second half to win in opener

Leading the Southwestern JV by just five points (25-20) at halftime, the Cowley College women’s basketball team shot 56.7 percent in the second half and pulled away for an easy 65-42 win over the Lady Builders Friday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium/Dan Kahler Court.

Clinging to a six-point lead (32-26) with 16:38 left to play in the game, Cowley used an 18-3 run to open a 50-29 lead, and never looked back en route to the 23-point win in its season opener.

“I thought we were a little more focused in the second half, and a little more locked in defensively,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Cowley was led by 5-10 freshman Radoslava Bachvarova as she finished with 24 points in her first game in a Lady Tiger uniform. Sophomore Megan Schoenfeld also came up big as she added 17 points and a game-high seven assists.

Sophomores Courtney Grant and Ashley Burnett came off the bench to supply the Lady Tigers a spark as Grant finished with seven points in eight minutes of playing time, and Burnett grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes.

Cowley out-shot Southwestern 47.5 percent to 35.1 percent from the floor. The Lady Tigers also went 5-of-6 from the three-point line, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Shawnte’ Bunting led Southwestern with 14 points, while no other Lady Builder player scored more than seven points in the defeat.

Cowley will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Tonkawa, Okla., to take on Northern Oklahoma College at 6 p.m.
