Trailing Northern Oklahoma College
22-14 after the first 20 minutes of play Wednesday in Tonkawa, the
Cowley College women’s basketball team found its offense in the
second half and rolled to a 55-40 win.
“The players really took over
in the second half,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “We
were a lot more aggressive.”
After trailing for virtually the
entire first half, Cowley finally regained the lead at 28-27 on a three-pointer
by sophomore Megan Schoenfeld with 12:30 remaining to play.
Clinging to a slim 35-34 lead with
nine minutes left, the Lady Tigers proceeded to go on a 15-1 run that
gave them a 50-35 lead with just 3:34 remaining.
Cowley would hold on from there
and improve its record to 2-0 on the season.
The loss drops NOC’s record
to 1-4.
Freshman forward Radoslava Bachvarova
led Cowley with 14 points, while Schoenfeld added 12 points, a game-high
11 rebounds, and seven assists. Also playing well for the Lady Tigers
was sophomore guard Lacey Rowe as she finished with seven points and
eight rebounds.
“Lacey got some huge rebounds
down the stretch that at 5-foot-7 she should not be getting,” Clark
said. “She has made a big bounce for us on the defensive end,
and she gives us some intangibles because she can hit shots. She’s
a great competitor and we wouldn’t be where we are at without
Lacey.”
The Lady Tigers will return to the
court on Saturday when they host the St. Gregory JV at 6 p.m.
“Having so many freshman,
we just have to cut down on our mistakes,” Clark said.
The game can be heard on KACY 102.5
FM.
Scoring for Cowley: Bachvarova 14,
Schoenfeld 12, Rowe 7, Alyssa Showman 7, Jennifer Williams 6, Tehani
Goldsmith 3, Brittany Wilson 2, Courtney Grant 2, Ashley Burnett 2.
