Lady Tigers improve to 3-0, prepare to host No. 8-ranked Barton County

Riding another strong defensive performance, the Cowley College women’s basketball team coasted to an easy 67-40 win over the St. Gregory University JV Saturday at W.S. Scott Auditorium/Dan Kahler Court.

The Lady Tigers held St. Gregory’s to 22.2 percent shooting as they built a 19-pont halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half of the 27-point win.

Cowley freshman Brittany Wilson scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, while sophomore Megan Schoenfeld scored 10 of her 12 points in the game’s first 20 minutes of play.

Freshman Radoslava Bachvarova added 10 points and seven rebounds, and fellow freshman Jennifer Williams came off the bench to finish with eight points and three rebounds in just 13 minutes of playing time.

Ten Lady Tigers scored in the win as Cowley improves to 3-0 on the season. St. Gregory’s is now 2-3.

One area of concern for Cowley heading into its home game against No. 8-ranked Barton County Community College on Tuesday is its performance on the offensive boards. The Lady Tigers allowed St. Gregory’s to pull down 25 offensive rebounds on Saturday.

“That is way too many,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “We are going to have to do a better job of rebounding the basketball.”

Barton County ended Cowley’s hopes of qualifying for the national tournament a year ago, as they defeated the Lady Tigers 59-50 in the second round of the Region VI Tournament.

Barton County, 2-0 on the season, defeated No. 16-ranked Iowa Western in its season opener, and then knocked off Coffeyville in overtime, 86-82. The Lady Cougars return three starters and six of their top eight scorers from a year ago.
Tuesday night’s game vs. Barton will tip off at 7 p.m.

“It would be nice to have a big crowd, and have our student’s come out and support us against a very good basketball team,” Clark said.
