Tiger cross country teams have strong showings at OSU

Running at one of the toughest cross country courses in the Midwest, the Cowley College cross country teams continued to run well as the men’s team placed third and the women finished fifth at the Oklahoma State university Cowboy Jamboree held Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.

“Both teams once again competed very well as a team and closed well over the last mile of a very tough course, showing that there are good things to come in the future,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.

Cowley freshman Daniel Maina continued his amazing season as he won the men’s race with a time of 24:46, while Stanley Mugo placed fourth with a time of 25:45. Arkansas City sophomore Dustin Garcia finished 27th with a time of 27:10, while Mauricio Morales (27:35) and Ferrien Harris (27:59) also ran well and placed 38th and 49th, respectively.

There were 192 runners in the men’s race and 190 in the women’s race.

“This meet will take us a long way towards our regional and national goals as it was the first time that many of our runners have run in this size of meet at this distance,” Phillips said.

The Lady Tiger cross country team was led by a pair of top-five finishes as Jeniffer Cherono (18:58) placed third and Irene Kosgei (19:10) finished fifth. Freshman Ashley Cronin also ran well and placed 28th with a time of 19:56.

The Tiger cross country teams will have some time off before competing at the Ollie Isom Invitational in El Dorado on Oct. 13. Races will begin at 4 p.m.
