With
several new faces on the squad, the Cowley College men’s basketball
team opened the 2006-2007 campaign with an 81-68 win over the Southwestern
College JV Wednesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Cowley led by as many as 25 points (56-31) before
settling for the 13-point win. Cowley head coach Brian Jackson was not
extremely pleased with the way his team played in the win.
“At least we came away with a win,” Jackson
said. “Hopefully, the guys can learn from a win like this. Sometimes
the guys believe they can just show up and win, but you have to concentrate
every second of the game and they found that out tonight.”
Freshman Sanijay Watts scored 16 of his game-high
22 points in the first half as Cowley built a 42-28 halftime lead. Sophomore
post player Santwon Latunde added 13 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman
Ludovic Dovonou finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.
Kyle Hubele was the lone Moundbuiler to score in double
figures as he led Southwestern with 19 points and seven rebounds in the
defeat.
Cowley will return to action Saturday when they play
at No. 16-ranked Seminole State at 4 p.m.
“They are a very good basketball team,” Jackson
said. “We play games like this to prepare our guys for conference
play. It will take some time, but as long as our kids are coachable we
will get there.”
The game can be heard on KACY 102.5 FM.
