The
Cowley College men’s basketball team bounced back from a 73-52
loss to Barton County on Saturday to defeat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M
College 72-59 Sunday at the Jayhawk Shoot-out in Coffeyville.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for
the Tigers and improved their record to 5-6 on the season.
Against NEO, Cowley built a 30-20
halftime lead by holding the Golden Norsemen to 28.6 percent shooting
in the game’s
first 20 minutes of play. Cowley maintained a double-digit lead throughout
the majority of the second half thanks to going 19-of-26 from the free-throw
line.
Freshman Nikola Grbicic led Cowley with 18 points
on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Santwon Latunde (pictured) added 17
points and seven rebounds, while James Loe came off the bench to finish
with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Tigers held a huge advantage on the boards as
they out-rebounded NEO 45-26 and allowed the Golden Norsemen to grab
just one offensive rebound.
Dominique Gaines led NEO with 25 points. The Golden
Norsemen struggled from the three-point line, making just 6-of-26 attempts.
NEO is now 6-6 on the season.
Against Barton County on Saturday, Cowley shot just
33.9 percent in the defeat. Latunde was the lone Tiger to score in double
figures as he finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Ivan Evans led Barton County with 22 points on 8-of-11
shooting from the floor. The Cougars made 9-of-16 three-point attempts
as they improved to 10-0 on the season.
Cowley will complete its non-conference
schedule when they play at Brown Mackie Wednesday at 6 p.m. The contest
will be the Tigers’ final game prior to Christmas break.
