Getting 23 points from freshman Sanijay Watts
and 20 points from sophomore James Loe, the Cowley College men’s
basketball team picked up a 71-51 win at Highland on Saturday.
The Tigers led 34-26 at the end of the first half and were never threatened
in the second half as they opened their lead to 50-37 on a three-pointer
by Loe with 10 minutes remaining, and led 59-41 after a basket by Watts
with 6:10 left to play.
After leaving Arkansas City at 5 a.m. Saturday morning, Cowley head coach
Brian Jackson was happy to see his team cap the long day with a win.
“It was a tough day, but we did enough to get a win,” Jackson said.
Watts, who was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference
Player of the Week, added six rebounds and four steals to go along with
his game-high 23 points. Larry Cox added 10 points and four rebounds,
while Joe Harvey chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds, and four
steals.
The Tigers held Highland to 33.3 percent shooting and forced the Scotties
into 21 turnovers. Jewel Carter’s 15 points led Highland. The loss
drops the Scotties’ record to 5-12 overall and 0-5 in the Jayhawk
Conference Eastern Division.
The win improves Cowley’s record to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the
Jayhawk East. The Tigers, who are in a four-way tie for second place
in the conference, will play at conference leading Coffeyville (15-3
overall, 5-1 Jayhawk East) Wednesday at 8 p.m.
“They have been one of the better teams in the state for the past five
or six years so it is going to be a good test for us on the road,” Jackson
said. “We are going to have to compete every possession and play hard
for 40 minutes.”
