Lady Tiger tennis suffers first loss of season

Playing a pair of difficult matches Saturday in Springfield, Mo., the No. 5-ranked Cowley College women’s tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season.

The Lady Tigers opened with a 6-3 win over Northwest Missouri State University before losing to Drury College 5-4.

Against Northwest Missouri State, Cowley got wins from its top-two doubles teams and its top four singles players. However, the bottom of the lineup struggled.

Against Drury, Cowley lost two matches in a super tiebreaker. After losing the first set against Drury’s Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez 4-6, Cowley’s Hanane Toumi rallied to win the second set 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The two players then traded points before Miranda-Sanchez finally won the super tiebreaker by a score of 11-9.

At No. 3 singles, Karolina Porizkova won the first set of her match against Drury’s Eva Hankova 6-0. However, Hankova turned the tables on Porizkova by winning the second set 6-0 and then took the match with a 10-6 win of the super tiebreaker.

The Lady Tigers are now 5-1 on the season. Cowley will be back in action today when they host Friends University at 2 p.m. at the J.C. Louderback Tennis Center.
