Having
never finished higher than third at the Region VI Outdoor Track and Field
Championships, the Cowley College men and women’s track and field
teams made history over the weekend as both teams captured Region VI
and Jayhawk East titles.
Competing at Hutchinson Thursday through Saturday, the Lady Tigers
gave a dominating performance in winning the conference title by
198 points over second place Johnson County (300-102). They also
finished 51 points better
than runner-up Butler County (207 ½ to 156 ½) in the region.
The Lady Tigers also won conference and region titles during the indoor
season.
“Our ladies went in and took care of business, they did what we expected,” Cowley
head coach Mark Phillips said.
The Tiger men’s performance was a little bit more of a surprise.
Phillips, who was named the men and women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Coach of the Year, thought the team had a chance to win conference and
region titles, but knew it would take a near perfect meet.
Cowley’s men’s team beat Johnson County by less than nine
points in the conference (217 ½-208 2/3), and 10 ½ points
in the region (145 ½-135).
“It was just an incredible meet by our guys,” Phillips said. “From
top to bottom, there were wonderful performances. We had guys step up and score
points that we were not expecting.”
Daniel Maina led the men’s team by winning conference titles in
the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, 5,000-meter run and as a member of
the 4x800-meter relay team. He also captured the region title in the
5,000-meter run and 4x800-meter relay, while finishing second in the
800 and 1,500-meter runs.
Stanley Mugo won conference titles in the 4x800-meter relay, 3,000-meter
steeplechase, and 10,000-meter run. He was also the region champion in
the 4x800-meter relay and 10,000-meter run.
“Stanley and Daniel had great meets,” Phillips said.
Ferrien Harris and Dante Miller teamed with Maina and Mugo on the 4x800-meter
relay team.
Cody Tabor and Adam Wolkins also won conference and region titles in
the shot put and javelin. Skyler Johnson finished just behind Tabor in
second place in the shot put in the conference and region.
“Our throwers had to come through for us to be able to win,” Phillips
said. “These guys showed up and were huge for us.”
The Lady Tigers were led by Jackline Kipwambok, who was named the Region
VI Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. Kipwambok was the conference
and region champion in the 1,500-meter run, 10,000-meter run, and as
a member of the 4x800-meter relay team. She also was the conference champion
in the 5,000-meter run.
Kipwambok had to defeat Colby’s Betty Rotich, a multiple national
champion in cross country and indoor track, to claim the region titles.
“That is an example of how good of a meet she had,” Phillips said.
Amelia Lewis also was the conference champion in four events as she won
the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and was a member of the 4x100-meter
relay team.
“Amelia had an incredible meet,” Phillips said.
Freshman Kelsey Poljansek also had a stellar meet as she won conference
and region titles in the shot put and discus.
The Tiger track and field teams will now prepare to compete at the NJCAA
National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held May
17-19 in Coffeyville.
“Both teams will be going to nationals riding high,” Phillips said.
