With assistant baseball coach J.R. DiMercurio recently
taking a scouting position with the Minnesota Twins, the Cowley College
baseball team was looking for a solid replacement to help the program
continue its success.
The Tigers found that person in Scott Camien, who spent the past three
and a half years as the associate head coach at Allen County Community
College.
Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs was impressed with Camien as a player
and as a coach.
“He was kind of a hard nosed guy at Allen that we admired from a far,” Burroughs
said. “He has got some experience in state and is energetic and enthusiastic.
We are very excited to have him on board with us.”
Camien played baseball in high school at Topeka-Seaman. He then played
two years of baseball at Allen County. He passed up a minor league contract
with the New York Mets to play at Arkansas State University. After a
season at ASU, he played his final year at Emporia State University.
He earned all-conference honors at Allen County and Emporia State. Following
his playing days he spent two years teaching and serving as the head
baseball coach at Leavenworth High School.
He then was offered an opportunity to be the associate head coach at
his alma mater, Allen County. However, after three and a half years at
Allen County, he decided the opportunity to coach at Cowley was too good
to pass up.
“I played against Cowley and always had a tremendous amount of respect
for the program,” Camien said. “The Burroughs’ brothers know
a lot about the game and I am excited about working with those guys.”
At Cowley, he will not only serve as an assistant baseball coach, he
will also serve as the Robert Storbeck Dormitory manager and work in
the Ben Cleveland Wellness Center.
On the diamond, he will coach the infielders and serve as one of the
base coaches. He will also help in recruiting.
“My coaching style is very similar to my playing style, I just want to
see the guys get out there and work hard,” Camien said. “I’m
looking forward to being a part of a place where the athletics have a great
deal of pride in being successful.”
He and his wife, Lacey, have a daughter, Bailey 4.
