Wall helps Tiger baseball win three of four on the weekend

Heath WallLed by freshman Heath Wall’s two grand slams, the Cowley College baseball team won three of four home games played over the weekend.

Wall (pictured) finished the weekend 6-of-11 at the plate with three home runs and 13 runs batted in.

On Saturday, the Tigers swept a doubleheader against Longview. After allowing Longview to grab a 7-5 lead by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning of game one, Cowley rallied to win the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers got just one hit in the three-run rally as they benefited from two walks and two hit batsmen. Chase Roten went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s in the win.

Michael Flanagin (5-4) picked up the victory as he recorded the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning. John Maler started on the mound and allowed three runs in four innings.

Cowley would score eight runs in the fourth inning of game two as they run-ruled Longview 12-2 in five innings. Wall’s grand slam home run highlighted the eight-run fourth. Wall finished the game 2-for-2 with five runs batted in. Tom O’Gorman and Tyson Parks each went 3-for-3 with two RBI’s.

Chris O’Brien earned the win on the mound as he allowed just four hits and two runs in five innings pitched.

On Sunday, Cowley played a conference doubleheader against Allen County. The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning of game one, but managed just one run the rest of the way as they lost 5-3.

Brice Cole had two hits and scored a pair of runs in the defeat. Curt Simpson shut out Allen County through the first four innings before allowing three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Simpson allowed four hits and three runs in five innings pitched as he fell to 4-1 on the season.

Cowley’s bats came alive in the second game as they scored 14 runs in the first two innings of play en route to a 19-6 five-inning run-rule win.

Once again, Wall hit a grand slam in an eight-run second inning. Wall finished the game 3-for-3 with two home runs and eight RBI’s.

Connor Farris picked up the win on the mound as he allowed eight hits and six runs in four innings pitched. Luke Zeller finished the game by pitching a perfect fifth inning.

The Tigers are now 29-16 overall and 24-7 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Allen County moves to 25-20 on the season and 18-15 in the conference. Cowley has a 2 ½ game lead over Fort Scott (21-9) with five conference games remaining.

Cowley will complete its suspended game at Independence today at 5 p.m. The game was halted last Thursday with the Tigers trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
