Cowley men improve to 10-1 with wins at Jayhawk Shootout
Hot-shooting Cowley College men’s basketball
team defeated a pair of Jayhawk West foes over the weekend at the
Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville.
The Tigers, which are shooting over 60 percent on the season, shot
50 percent in a 75-62 win over Dodge City on Saturday, and then shot
57 percent in an 81-72 victory over Butler Community College on Sunday.
The victories improve Cowley’s record to 10-1 on the season.
“That was our goal, was to win both games,” Cowley head
coach Steve Eck said.
Against Dodge City on Saturday, Cowley led just 33-28 at the end of
the first half before pulling away for the 13-point win. Sophomores
Chris Rhymes and Preston Brown scored 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Freshman Jack Crowder came off the bench to record a double-double
with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
“Jack played a key role for us,” Eck said.
Anthony Harris led Dodge City with 26 point and nine rebounds. The
Conquistadors, which shot just 38 percent from the floor, are now 5-5
on the season.
Against Butler, Cowley led 42-39 and the end of the first half and
clinged to a four-point lead with 12 minutes remaining. However, the
Tigers, behind strong play from Montrell McDonald, increased its lead
to 15 points late in the game and were never threatened again.“Montrell really came through for us,” Eck said.
McDonald finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Crowder had another solid game for the Tigers as he finished with 15
points and seven rebounds. Rhymes and Brown rounded out Cowley players
in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Butler’s Logan Stutz finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds
in defeat. The Grizzlies fall to 4-8 on the season.
Cowley will wrap up its non-conference slate Wednesday when they host
Eastern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. The Tigers rallied from an eight-point
halftime deficit to win at Eastern Oklahoma last Tuesday.
“The first time we played a team twice we didn’t do very
well,” Eck said referring to a loss to Northern Oklahoma College
on Nov. 17 in the second meeting between the teams. “Eastern
is playing well, we just have to keep on getting better.”
