Young blasts two more homers in Lady Tigers’ sweep of Fort Scott

Kashilia Young continued her torrid hitting by blasting a two-run game-winning home run in the first game of a doubleheader at Fort Scott on Tuesday, and then crushed another homer in the nightcap as the No. 8-ranked Cowley College softball team swept a pair of games from the Lady Greyhounds.

Young’s homer in the first game came with the score tied at 0-0 in the top of the eighth inning. Breayle Tackett led off the inning with a single and Young followed with her eighth home run of the season.

Heather Davis made the lead stand up as she allowed just two hits in eight innings. Davis struck out nine in improving to 7-0 on the season.

In the nightcap, Tackett hit a solo home run in the first inning to put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0. The homer was Tackett’s third of the season. Cowley added a run in the second and then broke the game open by scoring six runs in the third. Young’s ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot, highlighted the inning.

Young is batting .592 with nine home runs and 25 RBI’s through the team’s first 14 games.

“Kashilia is on track to set every offensive record we have if she stays healthy,” Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove said.

Two errors by the Lady Tigers allowed Fort Scott to score an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Cowley made up for it by scoring four times in the sixth to run-rule the Lady Greyhounds 12-1.

Jacey Juden (4-3) earned the win as she allowed five hits and no earned runs in six innings pitched. Colby Hart led the Lady Tigers’ 11-hit attack by going 3-for-5 at the plate.

Cowley is now 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Fort Scott falls to 1-7 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

“I was disappointed we didn’t put Fort Scott away earlier in the first game, but I should be satisfied with the win regardless of the score,” Hargrove said.

The Lady Tigers will now prepare to take part in the Mid-West JUCO Classic Saturday and Sunday in Broken Arrow, Okla. On Saturday, Cowley will battle Barton County at 10:30 a.m., Rose State at 1:30 p.m., and Iowa Western at 3 p.m.

“It will be a tough weekend, we will see some very good competition,” Hargrove said.
