Former
Cowley College softball standout, Ashly Bright, broke Wichita State
University’s single-season strikeout record in the Shockers 2-1
win over Creighton University on Sunday.
Bright fanned Michelle Koch leading off the third for her 248th strikeout
of the season, breaking the mark set by Margo Pruis in 2006. She finished
the game with 12 strikeouts and has 255 for the season.
Bright also scored the game’s winning run as she hit a two-out
triple in the ninth and scored on a single by Kiersten Dixon.
At Cowley, Bright was as feared on the mound as she was at the plate.
She holds the school-record for strikeouts in a season (408) and in a
career (726), and also holds 13 other pitching records. She also owns
eight individual hitting records at Cowley.
During her two years with the Lady Tigers, she was named a two-time all-American
and helped lead the team to back-to-back fourth place finishes at the
NJCAA Division II National Championships.
